A damaged hip joint needs to be replaced for pain-free hip movement. The pain one experiences during an ailing hip can be intolerable and make mere daily tasks impossible.
Hip replacement surgery can help relieve pain and stiffness and enhance body mobility.
But how do you discover that it is time to make an appointment with an orthopaedic doctor in town?
Symptoms you Need Hip Replacement
Chronic Pain
If you experience severe pain in your lower back or hip region then there is a high chance that you might need a hip replacement. Besides, the doubt about hip replacement surgery vanishes if taking rest does not relieve the pain, and conservative medicines have not worked either.
Stiffness
Stiffness in the hip area can be a result of a damaged hip joint or because of an injury. Stiff hip joints make it impossible to move the legs without experiencing shooting pain in the lower back and leg region.
Acute pain goes away after proper rest and conservative treatments. But if the pain persists, it is better to not delay and visit an orthopaedic doctor for hip replacement.
Osteoarthritis
The cartilage and synovial fluid are responsible for a swift hip movement by reducing the friction between the pelvic bone socket and the femoral head joint. But when a person experiences osteoarthritis, the fluid wears down causing wear and tear of the joints, thus damaging them.
Rheumatoid arthritis
People with an overactive immune system experience rheumatoid arthritis. It causes a painful inflammation that erodes the bone joints. Rheumatoid arthritis leads to bone deformity, thus causing physical disabilities.
What are the Different Hip Replacement Surgeries?
Depending on the severity of joint damage, hip replacement surgery is of three types- total hip replacement, partial hip replacement, and hip resurfacing.
Total Hip Replacement
The damaged parts of the hip are replaced with artificial implants. In place of the hip socket, the orthopaedic doctors insert a durable plastic cup. The plastic cup might or might not have a Titanium metal shell.
Further, the femoral head gets replaced with a ceramic or metal alloy ball and to add stability to the hip with the artificial implants, a metal stem is inserted in the top of the femur.
Partial Hip Replacement
This hip replacement surgery is most common in older patients with the fractured hip bone. Unlike total hip replacement, doctors replace only one side of the hip in partial hip replacement treatment.
Partial hip replacement focuses on the replacement of the femoral head and not the socket.
Hip Resurfacing
Hip resurfacing is mostly done in younger patients with damaged cartilage. The doctors trim the damaged bone and cap it with a smooth metal covering. They also replace the damaged cartilage in the socket and line it with a metal shell.
